A couple of days later, when I answered the telephone I was surprised to find it was Josh Winter calling, ‘Miss Soames? Emma, isn’t it? Is Josie around?’

‘No, she isn’t,’ I said coldly. ‘She’s upstairs with the baby.’

‘Good. It’s you I want to speak to — I’ve been talking to Robert — he suggested I get in touch with you.’

I lost my breath.

‘Will you meet me in the village? Have coffee? And don’t tell Josie?’

What was Robert thinking of? What was Josh Winter up to? Why the hell should I?

‘Robert says —’ he began but I heard Jo coming downstairs and cut him short.

‘When? Where?’

The meeting was arranged.

‘Who was that?’ Jo asked.

‘Nobody important.’
